MOUNT VERNON — “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,” said John F. Kennedy. Those words are assuredly the most famous uttered by the 35th President of the United States of America. They were said as part of his inaugural address and were expressed to help the nation usher itself into a new, brighter future, one that many have called Camelot.

What better way to inaugurate Elixir’s Chautauqua Series’ sixth year then having John Fitzgerald Kennedy kick off the 2012 season? Thursday at 7 p.m. at Mount Vernon’s ThePlace@TheWoodward (111 S. Main St. in historic downtown Mount Vernon), Jim Stoner, veteran of the Chautauqua stage, will bring JFK to life, portraying the man as the real John Kennedy, the one the average American has only glimpsed.

The Kennedy family was and is well known for its secrecy and buying their way to power. But the image of John F. Kennedy was forged by stints in the Navy as a PT Boat Captain and his Pulitzer Prize wining, “Profiles in Courage.” Through the idealism of his Alliance for Progress and Peace Corps to his stand in the Cuban Missile Crisis and fight against communism and his leadership in establishing a goal of putting a man on the moon before the decade’s end, Kennedy, his good looks and apparent picture-perfect family were christened America’s royalty, his Presidency revitalizing and renewing America’s spirit and standing in the world. And then on Nov. 22, 1963, the dream came to an end in Dallas, Texas, when Kennedy was murdered; the fourth President assassinated while in office.

Opening the program, bringing back images of the folk singer, protest songs and the Viet Nam era will be Canadian musician, Sebastian Royale. This mysterious singer/songwriter will be making his debut and is certain to set the mood perfectly for the appearance of Kennedy.

Elixir presents the only monthly Chautauqua in the United States. The doors at open at 6 p.m., Sebastian Royale will take the stage at 7 p.m. with JFK starting at about 7:45 p.m. There will be a question and answer period right after the performance. This program is presented on a donation basis.
