MOUNT VERNON — The Kokosing Valley Beekeepers Association is hosting a beginner beekeeping course workshop, Saturday, Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and will be held at the Knox County Extension building, 1025 Harcourt Road, Mount Vernon. Seats are limited, so preregistration is required.

All the basic information needed to become a beekeeper will be covered. The sessions will be taught by beekeeping members of Kokosing Valley Beekeepers Association with over 100 years of combined experience. “We can’t teach everything there is to know about beekeeping in one day, but it will be enough to get anyone interested in beekeeping started,” said Brian Farmer, program chairman. “There is a lot to know, and even as experienced beekeepers, we continue to learn something new all the time.”

The course will include topics such as what types of bees are suited for the Knox County area, and the best ways to acquire bees and install them in a new hive. Also, the course will cover hive parts, equipment needs, and even the best location for a hive. Most importantly, discussions will be held on how to keep bees healthy and how to deal with pest problems.

Registration cost per person includes the book “First Lessons in Beekeeping,” by Dr. Keith Delaplane, and lunch will be provided. The seating is limited, so registration closes on Feb. 3.

For more information, to register and get a complete agenda, visit or call 740-627-0741.
