GAMBIER — On Ash Wednesday, Harcourt Parish Episcopal Church will be offering a new outreach to the Gambier community. In addition to offering two Eucharists with the imposition of ashes (12:10 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.) and one Taize-style contemplative service (5 p.m.), Harcourt Parish will be walking out of their doors and onto the campus of Kenyon College to offer ashes to students, faculty and staff walking on the school’s Middle Path throughout the day.
The “Ashes To Go” concept began in 2006 with an ecumenical Bible study made up of clergy in the Tower Grove area of St. Louis. The group consisted of clergy from the Presbyterian Church USA, Disciples of Christ, United Church of Christ, American Baptist and Mennonite traditions. Since then it has gained momentum and spread to various denominations across the country. The Episcopal “Ashes to Go” movement began several years ago in Chicago and is gaining momentum within the Episcopal Church.
