DANVILLE — The GED test has been referred to as the high-school equivalency test. The test measures one’s ability against that of graduating high school students and gives the individual a chance to earn a certificate that is the equivalent of a high school diploma. Individuals interested in getting their GED do not have to go back to high school to get it.

Locally, individuals may attend Adult Basic Literacy Education classes to work toward their GED at no cost. These classes are held during the school year on Mondays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at The Sanctuary Service Center, at 304 Market St., Danville. The location is on the second floor of a newly renovated house that is handicap accessible by elevator from the first floor. Individuals may also access the second floor from the easy-to-maneuver fire escape stairs or by the interior stairs.

The ABLE program is open to any individual who wishes to obtain basic learning skills or wants to work toward their GED. Education and basic reading, writing and math skills are necessary for gainful employment. Never give up, there is a way to obtain the necessary skills so as to get gainful employment and feel good about one’s self.

Classes will begin Monday and continue through the current school year. Individuals may enroll at any time. Classes are conducted in classroom style as well as one-on-one with Internet access under the supervision of a certified instructor. For more information or to enroll, call the Knox County Career Center at 393-2933, ext. 1118 (refer to the Danville site when making inquiry).
