MOUNT VERNON — “A Century of Fine Dining at The Alcove” will be the program for the March 7 meeting of the Knox County Historical Society. The Wednesday evening meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the KCHS Museum, 875 Harcourt Road.
The PowerPoint presentation will feature many photographs and highlights from news stories over the past 100 years since The Alcove Restaurant opened as “Candyland” on Dec. 6, 1911. Over the years, founders Fred Surlas and Pete Francis grew the business from the original ice cream and candy shoppe to the fine family restaurant that became a regular stop for Ohio State fans and other travelers as they crossed Ohio on the 3-C Highway during the 1940s and ’50s. The meeting is free and open to the public, and all persons interested in area history are invited to attend. As a special treat, Alcove snacks will be provided after the program.
The March meeting marks the reopening of the Historical Society Museum after its winter break. Regular open hours now include Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m., and Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Upcoming monthly programs include “The Centennial of Smith Hardware” (April 4), “The Bicentennial of The War of 1812” (May 2), and “Kokosing Construction’s 60th Anniversary” (June 6).
