MOUNT VERNON — Knox County’s Democrats will kick off the election season with good company and great chili at the party’s annual chili dinner Wednesday, April 24.

Delivering the keynote will be Justice Yvette McGee Brown of the Ohio Supreme Court. Joyce Healy-Abrams, Democratic candidate for Ohio’s 7th congressional district will also be meeting Knox County residents at the dinner.

Serving on the Ohio Supreme Court since early 2011, Justice Brown is a candidate for a full term on the November ballot. She joined former Governor Ted Strickland on the 2010 ballot as a candidate for lieutenant governor. Before her statewide run, Brown served as president of the Center for Child and Family Advocacy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus and, before that, was a domestic relations and juvenile court judge on the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas.

Joyce Healy-Abrams, a resident of Canton, built and operated a small business for 10 years. Passionate about civic engagement, Joyce has been involved with a number of Ohio non-profit organizations committed to arts and education, women’s issues, and children with special needs. She is a current member of the board of trustees for the Canton Symphony Orchestra and utilizes her entrepreneurial background in key leadership roles. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Capital University and a master’s of business administration from Case Western Reserve University.

In addition to Brown and Healy-Abrams, candidates John Booth for Knox County Commissioner and John Ryerson for state representative for the 68th district will also speak. The event begins with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and remarks at 6:30 p.m.

There is a per-persion admission charge for the dinner. The event will be held at the Dan Emmett Conference Center, 160 Howard St., Mount Vernon. To register, e-mail events@knoxcountydems.org or register at www.knoxcountydems.org.
