MOUNT VERNON — This is National Public Health Week, an annual observance to bring awareness to practicing healthy behaviors and the importance of public health. To celebrate this this year’s theme, “A Healthier America Begins Today,” the Knox County Health Department is joining forces with the Knox County Park District to sponsor a monthly wellness walk. Tactfully named “Get Your Tail to the Trail,” each monthly walk begins at 9 a.m. on the first Saturday of the month at a different walking trail in the park district and will feature a health topic.

This Saturday’s walk will begin at the main entrance of the Kokosing Gap Trail, off of Mount Vernon Ave.

There is no cost to take part in the walk and pre-registration is not necessary. The wellness walks will be led by Health Commissioner Julie Miller and other health department staff. “Basically, you just need to come prepared to walk,” said Miller. “You can walk at your own pace and whatever distance you want to.” The first 50 people to participate in Saturday’s walk will receive a plastic water bottle especially designed for the Get Your Tail to the Trail walks.

“Walking is one of the best activities you can do to be healthy,” said Miller. “The benefits are endless; walking lowers bad cholesterol and raises good cholesterol. It can lower blood pressure, reduce your risk for Type 2 diabetes, help manage weight and improve your mood. And it doesn’t cost anything.”

Health care costs have risen 300 percent 1990. “In many cases, these costs are increasing because people are not taking preventive measures to avoid getting sick,” said Miller. “Knox County residents can make a real difference in our community by committing to healthier behaviors for themselves, their children and families. We will find real change when we shift from a reactionary health system to one focused on preventive measures. Walking is a good place to start.”

In addition to various parts of the 14-mile Kokosing Gap Trail, monthly walks are planned on the Heart of Ohio Trail in Centerburg, Wolf Run off of Yauger Road, Ramser Arboretum in Jelloway and the Mohican Valley Trail near the Bridge of Dreams in Brinkhaven and in Fredericktown. The location for each monthly walk will be announced one to two weeks before the first Saturday of the month and will depend on the weather and condition of the trail. For more information, call the health department at 740-399-8002.
