MOUNT VERNON — The third production of The Alcove Dinner Theater 2011-12 season of shows will be the critically acclaimed production of “Moonlight and Magnolias,” often billed as “the comedy behind ‘Gone With the Wind,’” written by Ron Hutchinson.

It’s Hollywood, in 1939. Famed film producer David O. Selznick (Steve Stone) decides to stop the filming of “Gone With the Wind” three weeks into production because he wants a rewrite of the unwieldy script. He decides to hire prolific screenwriter Ben Hecht (Richard McKinley) to do the job. Only one problem: Hecht has never read the novel. Selznick has his secretary (Carrie Crouch) summon Hecht and flamboyant “The Wizard of Oz” director Victor Fleming (Bruce Jacklin) to his office and locks the door. Subsisting on a diet of bananas and peanuts, the three men spend five hilarious days crafting the screenplay for what will become one of the most successful films of all time. Based on a true story, “Moonlight and Magnolias” is a wildly funny farce and winning story that illuminates the behind-the-scenes business of movie-making — and the larger-than-life egos — during the Golden Age of Hollywood.

The production/design team for the production includes Bruce Jacklin (producer), Susan Moreland (director), Steve Herbst (scenic construction), Chris Aust (costume designer), Scott Swingle (lighting operator), Carrie Crouch (program design), Kate Redfield and Bonnie Pickett (stage managers) and Ian Ernsberger (lighting and sound design).

Performances begin April 19, with a unique “Gone With the Wind” party featuring a Southern-style social hour and a special Dixie Plantation dinner, followed by the full performance of “Moonlight and Magnolias.” Social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., dinner is served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the performance.

The evening dinner theater performances April 20, 21, 27 and 28 will begin at the usual time of 6:30 p.m. cocktails, 7:30 p.m. dinner and then the performance following dinner. There will be show-only performances (no meal) Thursday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday afternoon, April 28, at 2.
