MOUNT VERNON — Knox County Head Start, a National Head Start Center of Excellence, is offering a free parenting training for expectant parents and parents of infants and toddlers. The two-hour session, “The Magic of Connecting” will be held Tuesday, May 2, at 6 p.m., at New Hope Early Education Center, 11700 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon.

Renee Sutherland, LISW-S, child mental health coordinator for Knox County Head Start, will present this training on helping parents and caregivers learn how to build strong connections with infants and toddlers through play, which in turn will support healthy brain development, build trusting relationships and encourage cooperation. Parents will learn the basic ingredients for building healthy connections as well as fun games to play using “I Love You Rituals.”

Sutherland, a certified conscious discipline instructor and an early childhood mental health specialist, trains parents and educators throughout Ohio and the nation. She has presented in Chicago for Region V Head Start, at National Head Start conferences in Kansas City and Nashville, at the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Public Children Services Association of Ohio, and the Ohio Association for Education of Young Children. She has also delivered direct consulting and training for other Head Start agencies in Ohio, the United States Air Force Child Development Center and the Indiana Association for Education of Young Children. With her goal of “helping parents be the best they can be for their children,” this training promises to provide valuable information and ideas for parents.

Knox County Head Start staff will provide free child care and dinner for parents and children during the session. To help attendees defray transportation costs, participants will receive a $10 stipend at the end of the training. If parents need transportation, KCHS will partner with Knox Transit Authority to provide rides to and from the training.

Limited seating is available. This training is made possible with funding from the United Way of Knox County. Call today to make a reservation at 397-1344.
