MOUNT VERNON — On Saturday, starting at 10:30 a.m., area tai chi and qigong students will join practitioners from around the world to celebrate World Tai Chi & Qigong Day. Participants will initially meet at The Living Center in Mount Vernon.
Area coordinator for the event will be Bob Casey, Tai Chi for Health and Arthritis instructor. “We will join individuals from over 65 countries, crossing six continents, as well as those in many cities throughout the U.S. in celebrating this event. This is the third year for our annual celebration,” said Casey.
At 10:30 in The Living Center ceremonies will open with a welcome and reading of proclamations signed by Fredericktown Mayor Alan Kintner and Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis. For the next 50 minutes, practitioners and the visiting public will have the option to participate in tai chi and qigong activities. No previous experience is required. The goals of the event are to make the public more aware of the healthful benefits of these exercise programs, to celebrate with practitioners worldwide on this designated day, and to have fun.
Weather permitting, following The Living Center activities, interested participants will head to Public Square to perform the tai chi form on the square. At the conclusion of the program all will be invited to the Bombay Garden and Greek Eats for lunch. There is a cost for the luncheon. Except for the luncheon, all the activities are free.
Students from as far away as Mansfield will join ones from Fredericktown and Mount Vernon. Area instructors participating in the day’s program are Tai Chi for Arthritis (TCA) instructors Grace Fogle with the Mount Vernon Y; Marshal Winkle with the Mount Vernon Wellness Center; Caroline Wadsworth with the Richland Academy and MedCentral; Bob Casey with the Fredericktown Senior Activity Center and Kingwood Center of Mansfield; and qigong instructor Steve Hatfield of Panther Kenpo Karate of Mount Vernon.
For those unfamiliar these exercise programs, tai chi and qigong, originated in China and are now practiced all over the world as a means of keeping body and mind well and supple. Both are the perfect exercise for the total body. Tai Chi for Health and Arthritis is especially helpful for those suffering from arthritis or mobility issues; and is recognized as a beneficial health tool by the National Arthritis Foundation.
