HOWARD — “Get Your Tail to the Trail,” the monthly wellness walk sponsored by the Knox County Health Department and the Knox County Park District will begin at the Howard entrance to the Kokosing Gap Trail in May. The walk will take place Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

There is no cost to take part in the walk and pre-registration is not necessary. The wellness walks will be led by Health Commissioner Julie Miller and other health department staff. “Basically, you just need to come prepared to walk,” said Miller. “You can walk at your own pace and whatever distance you want.”

The Howard entrance to the Kokosing Gap Trail is located off US 36 in Howard, right before Nancy Maria’s Pizza and across from Griller’s Barbecue. For the May 5 walk, participants will be walking east, toward Danville.

The monthly wellness walk began April 7 and will continue through Nov. 3, on the first Saturday of the month. “It was pretty chilly for our first walk, but everyone came bundled up” said Miller. “We are hoping the weather will be a bit warmer for the May walk.” The first 50 people to participate in the May 5 walk will receive a plastic water bottle especially designed for the “Get Your Tail to the Trail” walks.

“Walking is one of the best activities you can do to be healthy,” said Miller. “The benefits are endless: Walking lowers bad cholesterol and raises good cholesterol. It can lower blood pressure; reduce your risk for Type 2 diabetes; help manage weight; and improve your mood. And it doesn’t cost anything.”

In addition to various parts of the 14-mile Kokosing Gap Trail, monthly walks are planned on the Heart of Ohio Trail in Centerburg, Wolf Run off of Yauger Road, Ramser Arboretum in Jelloway and the Mohican Valley Trail near the Bridge of Dreams in Brinkhaven and in Fredericktown. The location for each monthly walk will be announced at least one to two weeks before the first Saturday of the month and will depend on the weather and condition of the trails. Check the health department website,, for future walk location announcements.
