CENTERBURG — Those wishing to give their mother (or grandmother) a special Mother’s Day weekend gift of spring wildflowers along a woodland trail may take her on a Wildflower Walk on Sunday at 2 p.m. This special program to honor local mothers is sponsored by the Centerburg Joint Recreation District and will meet at the Centerburg/Hilliar Township Memorial Park on the corner of U.S. 36 and Ohio 314, on the north edge of Centerburg, for a short drive to a local forest.

“This is for someone that would like to surprise their mom or grandmother with an adventure, something different this year,” said Gary Moore, program consultant for Centerburg Joint Recreation District. “Lots of people send flowers, but this is a chance to walk through an outstanding woods with a great diversity of wildflowers. Early May is typically the peak of spring wildflowers in Ohio, and Ohio has an amazing diversity of wildflowers that is among the best in the United States. A high-quality woods and meadow of 1,000 acres may have over 1,000 species of flowering plants. CJRD is very fortunate that we can visit this outstanding local private woods. The late Ced Coonfare and his wife, Patti, have protected their woods for years and developed trails for close friends to enhance access and learning opportunities.”

“Although the program provides a special treat for mothers, it is also an opportunity to bring a special friend or perhaps the whole family for a walk in the woods. The leisurely walk along a relatively easy trail should last about an hour with stops along the way to admire, identify and learn about some lore, medicinal and edible characteristics of some species. Participants should dress for the weather and wear weatherproof shoes,” added Dave Beck, CJRD administrator.
