MOUNT VERNON —The Heritage Centre Association’s June First Friday will be held on Friday, June 1, from 6-9 p.m., in downtown Mount Vernon.
Sponsored by First-Knox National Bank, the “Fabulous ’50s First Friday” event will feature the band Greased Lightning and the cast of MTVarts’ production of “Grease.”
An old-fashioned carnival will be set up in the First-Knox parking lot on West Vine Street. First-Knox will be giving away snow cones, cotton candy, root beer floats, balloons and game prizes. Contests include hula hoop, bubble gum blowing, hand jive and a “Born in the ’50s” reunion. The cast of “Grease” will perform on the stage at First-Knox throughout the evening.
Greased Lightning, comprised of local familiar musicians, will be playing music from the 1950s on the main stage. The “Grease” cast will also be featured on the main stage during the band’s breaks.
There will be a number of family-friendly activities, including Sophia’s Petting Zoo (sponsored by Rolls-Royce Employee Charity & Civic Fund), bounce house by Ohio Rental, and balloon sculptor Rex Naylor (sponsored by The Gold Exchange at Mount Vernon Coin & Collectibles).
The second annual Cornhole Tournament will be held on the Square at 6 p.m. Sponsors include Flapper’s Bar & Grille, Herald’s Appliances and Electronics and Page One Group. Cost is $5 per person/$10 per team to play; prizes are awarded for first and second place. Sign up at the event.
Donley Ford-Lincoln of Mount Vernon is the Cruise In sponsor. Goody bags will be given out to the first 25 registrants. There is no fee to participate; door prizes will be awarded. The registration tent will be on the west side of the Square. We are especially looking for cars from the 1950s.
Food will be provided on the Square by Flapper’s Bar & Grille, The High Restaurant, Woolson's Concessions and Gay Street United Methodist Church. Downtown merchants will be open late for shopping and various art galleries will host receptions.
