The 2012 Knox County Barn Tour will be held June 16 from 11a.m-6p.m. This free event, which began as a birthday celebration for the Knox County bicentennial in 2008, is the third biennial tour to be held. This year five barns in a scenic short self-guided driving route will take viewers to the area northeast of Danville, Ohio. Just east of Danville on Route 62 are two Amish homesteads and barns with a farm market and bakery. Drivers will then head north to three homesteads not very far from each other. Two of these farms are Century Farms still owned by families that have been there for generations.

All locations will have musicians. At each location there will be events to entertain all members of the family, young and old. There will be a blacksmith, farm equipment and tools, quilters, the Central Ohio Bluebird Society, farm animals and a petting zoo, snacks, and activities for children. Duke and Dudley, a team of Percherons will be hitched up for a ride at the Amish location.

Previous tours had  barn portraits painted prior to the event on display, but this year local artists will be painting on site, in plein-air, for the public to watch. The finished portraits will then be on display at Sips Coffee House in Mount Vernon the following Friday evening for two weeks.

Pamela Whitney Gray, the Lady Barn Consultant, will be assembling with the help of volunteers an 8x20 model of a barn. Mrs. Gray has published two books on barns and is  a nationally known expert on barn history and construction.

The coordinators of the tour, The Knox County Renaissance Foundation, The Owl Creek Conservancy, and Mrs. Gray are promoting this tour to raise the awareness of the cultural importance of barns to stem the tide of loss of these majestic utilitarian treasures.

Local sponsors are the CES Credit Union, First Knox National Bank,  Conklin Agro Vantage, Mid-Ohio Suzuki-Honda-Yamaha-Kawasaki, R&M Southside Dinner, Knox Community Hospital, and D&D Portable Toilets.
