MOUNT VERNON — Canton-area small businesswoman Joyce Healy-Abrams, a candidate for Congress in the 7th District, will host a conversation with Mount Vernon-area residents about the importance of protecting Medicare.
The informal meeting will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sips, 101 S. Main St.
According to the 2010 census, 8,987 Knox County residents are 65 or older and eligible for Medicare. That’s 14.8 percent of the county population, which is higher than the state and national averages.
“I know a lot of voters in Knox County are concerned about the future of Medicare,” Healy-Abrams said. “I am, too. I want to protect Medicare from the schemes we’ve been seeing from Washington politicians to push far more of the cost onto seniors.”
This is the first run for office for Healy-Abrams, a small businesswoman who knows what it takes to create jobs. Starting with a single employee, Healy-Abrams grew her records and file management business into a thriving success, creating jobs in Ohio.
Healy-Abrams is running in the 7th Congressional District, which includes all of Knox County as well as all or parts of Ashland, Coshocton, Huron, Holmes, Lorain, Medina, Richland, Stark and Tuscarawas counties.
