MOUNT VERNON — “Bedtime Stories — NOT Suitable for Children!” is the topic for the Between the Covers Summer Reading Program Adult Book Discussion on Tuesday, June 19, at 7 p.m. at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry St., Mount Vernon.

With several feature films based on old familiar fairy tales, and at least two hit television series — “Once Upon a Time” and “Grimm” — having roots in them as well, it’s evident that there is a renewed interest in these old stories in our society today. What’s behind the enduring appeal of fairy tales? And what were the

y like — originally? For fairy tales were originally not for children at all. So what were they intended to mean? Ted Dingler of the public library’s reference department will lead a discussion of these definitely-not-suitable-for-children’s stories, including an exploration of their original forms and functions — and asking some impertinent questions, such as: Why are there so many stepmothers, and why are they uniformly mean?

Copies of Grimm’s Fairy Tales are available to be checked out at the library’s circulation desk.

The book discussions, sponsored by the adult services department of the public library, are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

For more information, call 392-2665, ext. 230.
