CENTERBURG — The Centerburg Heart of Ohio USA Days festival will kick off Wednesday evening, offering four days of family-friendly entertaining culminating a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday night.

Headliners for the event will be The Drifters, back by popular demand after a show five years ago. The group will perform Friday at 8 p.m.

Unfortunately, only two of the original Drifters are still living. One is Ben E King, who left to go on his own, and the other is the amazing Charlie Thomas, whose voice is heard on every Drifters song since 1958. The group includes Thomas, who has been in show business for over 50 years, Jerome Manning, Steven Brown and Louis Bailey, son of the great tap dancer Bill Bailey and nephew of famous Pearl Bailey.

Thomas first sang gospel, then a short stint with the Orioles, then the Five Crowns, and joining the Drifters in 1958.

The Drifters recorded such hits as “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “Under the Boardwalk,” “Up on the Roof,” “On Broadway,” “Dance with Me,” “This Magic Moment,” “I Count the Tears,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” and more. They had 37 hit songs, sold over 80 million singles, and 200 million albums.

Saturday night’s main entertainment will take guests on an adventure in ’80s rock with Arrival, a Journey Tribute Band, beginning at 8 p.m.

Arrival is the Midwest’s premier Journey tribute rock band, set out to re-create the music of the legendary powerhouse rock band. With their love for this music, the band members put their heart and soul into every performance. They will perform Journey classics like “Separate Ways,” “Don’t Stop Believing,” “Open Arms” and “Lights.”

The group features Vic Harris on lead vocals with Mike Kolbylski on drums, Andrew Kos on keyboards, Dennis Davis on lead guitar and Eamon Johnson on bass.

Those planning to attend Friday and Saturday’s concerts are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. The festival starts Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Both the Centerburg Church of Christ and Centerburg United Methodist Church will be participating. The speaker will be Evangelist Fred Albrecht who will bring a patriotic message. A musical orchestra comprised of many area musicians will be conducted by John Packard of the Mount Vernon Nazarene College as a “God and Country” musical evening. Additional entertainment is expected.

Thursday evening features the Little Miss Liberty/Uncle Sammy Pageant at 7 p.m. and the Heart of Oh-Idol contest at 7:45 p.m.

Friday’s festivities include a Cruise In at 5 p.m., Project Roundtable at 6, Autographed Drifters guitar at 7:45 and the Drifters at 8.

Saturday starts off with “Celebrating Community Spirit” parade at 11 a.m., the cast of “Grease” at 4 p.m., Lucky Duck Race at 5:45 p.m., The Seven Tees, 5; The Caffiends, 6; Toddler Track Race at 7:30; Arrival at 8 and fireworks at 10.
