MOUNT VERNON — Petition circulators with Voters First, a nonpartisan coalition dedicated to reforming the redistricting process, will be available at open signing locations in Mount Vernon this week.

The locations are:

•Mount Vernon’s Memorial Park for a drive-in petition signing today and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. •At the headquarters of the Knox County Democratic Party, 1 Public Square in Mount Vernon, on Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

•In front of KCDP headquarters, 1 Public Square, during the Mount Vernon Farmers’ Market on the morning of Saturday, June 30, approximately 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Voter’s First proposal will create an independent citizens commission that will draw districts for legislative and congressional seats in Ohio. Politicians, lobbyists and political insiders are prohibited from serving on the commission. The commission’s work will be open and it accountable to the public. The commission will empower voters to choose their politicians instead of politicians picking their voters.

The proposal favors citizens, not politicians. Instead of the current system, in which district boundaries are drawn to favor one political party over another, the citizens commission will create districts that are geographically compact, representative of their communities, and not drawn to give one party advantage over another. Districts will be drawn to be balanced and competitive, ensuring that all Ohio citizens are represented.

If enough signatures are gathered by early July, the proposed constitutional amendment will be on the November 2012 ballot.
