MOUNT VERNON — When Jerrie Mock was a child growing up in Newark, she had three dreams — to ride a camel across the Sahara Desert, to ride an elephant in the jungle, and to fly around the world. She fulfilled two of her three dreams and became the first woman to fly solo around the world.
On Wednesday, at noon, Mock’s sister, Susan Reid, will present a program on her sister’s historic flight at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County. Reid will update guests on plans for a bronze statue in Newark to commemorate her sister’s 29-day, 11-hour and 59-minute flight that made world history in a time when women were expected to stay home and raise children.
The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments, door prizes and entry forms for the Between the Covers Adult Summer Reading Program grand prize drawings will be available.
