MOUNT VERNON — The golden era of silent movies will make a comeback at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County at a free public showing of the critically acclaimed film, “The Artist,” on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

As an added bonus, a special pre-show concert featuring Americana music on the library’s player piano will begin at 5:30 p.m. for early guests to enjoy.

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture, “The Artist” takes audiences back to the grand era of silent movies in Hollywood circa 1927. Actor Jean Dujardin plays the role of George Valentin — a silent movie superstar who does not believe silent movies will fall to “talkies.” This visually striking silent movie makes up for a lack of dialogue with a superb score and entertaining plot.

The movie is free and open to the public with free popcorn donated by Subway’s of Mount Vernon. Door prizes and entry forms for the Between the Covers Adult Summer Reading Program grand prize drawing concluding on July 28 will be available.

For additional information, contact the main library at 201 N. Mulberry St., Mount Vernon; call 740-392-2665, ext. 243; visit; or email
