MOUNT VERNON — The next monthly farmers market at the Knox County Health Department will be Tuesday, Aug. 21. The market will take place in the parking lot on the south side of the health department from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The farmers market is open to the public. Between six and 10 farmers are expected to take part in the market. Eligible WIC clients will be able to use designated coupons to purchase items at the market.
In addition to being able to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, attendees at the market are invited into the health department for cooking demonstrations at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Executive Chef Paul Higgins of Apple Valley will be showing new ways to cook fresh vegetables. For the August presentation, the featured vegetables will be eggplant and green beans. The cooking demonstrations are free and open to the public. Attendees will receive a cookbook featuring recipes for fresh produce.
The health department is sponsoring the farmers’ market on the third Tuesday of the month throughout the summer to coincide with the agency’s monthly late clinic. Medical clinic services available during the extended hours include TB tests, immunizations for both children and adults, including Tetanus shots and all shots required for school; rapid testing for HIV and STD counseling.
The dental clinic will be open for scheduled appointments.
Additional services available during the extended hours include birth and death records, water and well permits, water testing, food service permits and WIC nutritional counseling.
