MOUNT VERNON — The $600 million blockbuster, “The Hunger Games,” will be the feature at free movie night on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 6:30 p.m. at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County.
“The Hunger Games” (rated PG-13) is from the first book by Author Suzanne Collins of a trilogy originally written for young adults which includes, “Catching Fire” and “Mockingjay.” The series has crossed boundaries to become a favorite of all ages and genders. Set in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic America, now called “Panem,” the story is centered around the Hunger Games — an annual televised survival reality show where teen “tributes” from each of the country’s 12 districts are sent to battle to the death for fame and fortune as a reminder to the country of its violent past.
Questions of rebellion against centralized governmental power, senseless violence, class discrimination and gender roles are all cleverly intermingled with lessons of selflessness, sacrifice and determination. The movie is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5 p.m. and seating will be limited to 100. Popcorn will be donated by Subways of Mount Vernon. For information, contact the main library at 201 N. Mulberry St.; call 740-392-BOOK (2665); email communityrelations@knox.net; or visit www.knox.net.
