MOUNT VERNON — The Heritage Centre Association’s September First Friday will be held on Friday, Sept. 7, from 6 to 9 p.m., in downtown Mount Vernon. Sponsors include educational institutions Central Ohio Technical College, Kenyon College, Knox County Career Center Adult Education and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

The Colin John Band is the featured entertainment on main stage. Award-winning acoustic guitarist Brian Henke will be playing in front of Herald’s Appliances and Electronics, sponsored by Vino Where You Live and Ramser Arboretum. COTC will host The Ariel Band in its parking lot and artist Trisha Boehmer’s paintings will be unveiled at COTC at 6 p.m., followed by a community reception and open house. “Transformed,” an MVNU music and ministry team, will be playing in the university’s new Buchwald Plaza downtown.

The second annual Rubber Duck River Race will take place at the Kokosing River just west of the viaduct at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come watch! Entry packets will be available on the Square until 6:30 during First Friday. First prize is a two-year lease on a new Ford Focus from Donley Ford or $3,000. Creative Foundations will have a special duck art exhibit just for the occasion. For details, visit www.VisitDowntownMountVernon.com/RDRR.html. There will be a number of family-friendly activities, including Sophia’s Petting Zoo (sponsored by Rolls-Royce Employee Charity & Civic Fund), bounce house by Ohio Rental, and balloon sculptor Rex Naylor (sponsored by The Gold Exchange at Mount Vernon Coin & Collectibles).

A cornhole tournament will be held on the Square at 6 p.m. Sponsors include Flappers Bar & Grille, Herald’s Appliances and Electronics and Page One Group. There is a cost to play; prizes are awarded for first and second place. Sign up at the event.

Donley Ford-Lincoln of Mount Vernon is the Cruise In sponsor. Goody bags will be given to 25 random registrants. There is no fee to participate; door prizes will be awarded. The registration tent will be on the west side of the Square. Motorcycles are encouraged to come out and park in the 200 block of South Main.

Food will be provided on the Square by Flappers Bar & Grille, The High Restaurant, Woolson’s Concessions and Gay Street United Methodist Church. Downtown merchants will be open late for shopping and various art galleries will host receptions.

The Patriotic Memorial Committee will hold its annual POW/MIA vigil at 6 p.m. on the Square. It will involve The Heritage Singers and cadets from the ROTC program at the Knox County Career Center.

First Fridays’ media sponsors are WQIO/WMVO and WNZR. The stations will broadcast live from First Friday and downtown businesses. WNZR will be giving away a DVD prize basket. Stop by Big Blue for your chance to win. Traffic will be closed around the Square and on Main Street south of the Square to Howard Street starting at 4:30 p.m. Rain location for the band is The Place@The Woodward.
