MOUNT VERNON — The Dogwood Blossoms chorus is bringing its barbershop cruise ship, the SS Harmony, to the Memorial Theater on Saturday, Oct. 6, for its 32nd annual show. What fun there will be on board with entertainment featuring the Dogwood Blossoms chorus and guests the Con Men and TaVaci.
Director Donna Dudgeon and assistant directors Susan Baldeschwiler and Karen Burgess will lead the chorus in a variety of music selections including ’50s and ’60s, gospel, children’s and, of course, some old familiar favorites. Master of Ceremonies for this year is the ship’s cruise director Daniel Semelsberger. He will be joined by Swedish chef Kristen Baldeschwiler, and a couple of grumpy old men who seem to have comment about almost everything.
The Con Men are 2012 International Collegiate Quartet third-place medalists. They are an up-and-coming collegiate barbershop quartet which combines vocal beauty and youthful energy. David Strasser, Matthew Hopper, Russell Watterson and Brent Suver are all students or alumni of Capital University’s Conservatory of Music and started singing together as first-year college students. The Con Men are a young and exciting quartet committed to performing and promoting their beloved four-part barbershop harmony-style at the highest possible level.
TaVaci School of Performing Arts is a youth singing/performing group based in Mount Vernon and Knox County under the direction of DeAnne Groom. TaVaci students range in age from 4 to 14 years and perform in two concerts at the memorial Theater each year as well as the Knox County Fair, parades and more.
The Dogwood Blossoms Chorus is 32-year member of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, competition and performance. This independent, nonprofit music education association is one of the world’s largest singing organizations for women.
Membership in the chorus is open to women of all ages who love to sing. The Dogwood Blossoms Chorus invites interested women to visit at a rehearsal any Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Central Christian Church, 17833 Gambier Road, Mount Vernon.
