MOUNT VERNON — The Board of Knox County Commissioners reminds everyone that the collection date for household hazardous waste, scrap tires, computers, cell phones and personal documents is quickly approaching. The collection, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22, will take place at the Knox County Fairgrounds, from 9 to 1 p.m. Delaware, Knox, Marion and Morrow county residents wishing to attend this event should use the east gate. This entrance is located approximately a quarter mile west of the intersection of the Fairgrounds Road and Wooster Road.
Household items that will be accepted include flammables, corrosives, toxics/poisons and reactive materials. Flammables include lighter fluid, turpentine, flares, propane cylinders (a maximum of 20 pounds in size), adhesives, kerosene and gasoline. Corrosives include drain cleaner, pool chemicals, acids and batteries. Toxic/poisons include bleach, ammonia, weed killers, antifreeze, insect killers, brake fluid, mercury and rat poison.
Reactive materials include cyanide, pool chlorine, fertilizers and ammunition of 50 calibers or less. Scrap tires of any size, on or off the rim; along with, computers, cell phones and personal documents will also be collected.
New to the event this year will be the collection of personal documents for shredding. New Hope Industries will be collecting the documents and shredding on site.
Items that will not be accepted at this event include: household appliances, paint and televisions.
To help defray the cost of the event, a suggested donation per car or per truck with trailer is requested for the processing of hazardous waste, computers, cell phones and personal documents. A mandatory fee per tire will be charged. In order to shorten waiting periods, have an exact count of tires before entering the fairgrounds.
Citizens are urged to call Recycling Coordinator Linda Montgomery, in the Knox Commissioners Office at 393-6704 with questions regarding the household hazardous waste events or recycling in general.
