MOUNT VERNON — Knox County’s Buckeye Spirit Event is being held on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. at the Ohio Eastern Star Gallagher Centre. The OSU Alumni Club of Knox County hosts this annual dinner and Scholarship Fundraising event. Archie Griffin, vice president of OSU Alumni Relations and the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy, is the keynote speaker.
Special guests joining Griffin include the OSU Marching Band, OSU Cheerleaders with Brutus Buckeye, and BuckeyeMan. OSU Athletic Legends are also expected to attend. Greg Frey, former OSU quarterback and baseball player will be the Celebrity Auctioneer for the Scholarship Fundraising Auction.
The event begins with a tailgate-style meal of pulled BBQ pork, hamburgers, brats, baked beans, potato salad, broccoli salad, cookies and Velvet Ice Cream.
Dave Daniels, program chairman of the Knox County OSU Alumni Club, said that all the special OSU guests will be available for pictures and autographs throughout the evening. There will also be a performance by the OSU Marching Band.
A major function of the local OSU Alumni Club is sponsoring scholarships for students who graduated from Knox County high schools attending Ohio State. Daniels noted that a silent and live Scholarship Fund Raising Auction will be conducted, and will include such items as footballs signed by Archie Griffin, framed OSU pictures with autographs, a bow tie donated by OSU President E. Gordon Gee, autographed OSU basketballs and numerous items donated by area merchants.
Due to the growing popularity of this annual event, seating is limited to 250 guests. The ticket price includes the meal and festivities. Invitations will be mailed to Knox County OSU Alumni Club Members and 2012 Scholarship Fund supporters for priority seating. The general public is welcome, and can purchase tickets from through Oct. 15 at First-Knox National Bank office locations in Mount Vernon. The event’s social hour begins at 6 p.m. with the dinner and program following.
