MOUNT VERNON — The Heritage Centre Association, along with Mount Vernon News, is in the planning process for downtown Mount Vernon’s annual Christmas Parade & Walk. Part of this includes transforming the shop windows into beautiful works of art for families to enjoy as they are shopping.

HCA will hold an annual Christmas window display contest. This year’s theme is the same as the parade and walk—“Christmas ’50s Style.” Shops may express this theme however they wish, whether they focus on toys of the decade, music, holiday traditions, decorations, or another aspect of the 1950s.

For those who may need some inspiration or assistance in developing ideas or coming up with materials, there will be a Window Wonderland Workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Chamber of Commerce, 400 S. Gay St. It will be led by local designers and window experts Vickie Coleman and Jamie Henry. The workshop is free for HCA members; there is a small fee for non-members. Breakfast and beverages will be provided.

The public will vote for their favorite window display. Voting will occur at Christmas Walk, Nov. 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. at participating stores, the HCA office, and online at HCA’s Facebook page. The winner will receive a half-page ad in the Mount Vernon News and will be announced the week of Nov. 26.

Those wishing to participate should have their window decorated by Nov. 21. Contact HCA’s downtown manager Carrie Crouch to be included on the official voting ballot and a photo of your window can be taken for online voting purposes.
