MOUNT VERNON — One of the most beloved musicals of all time, “The Music Man,” will march into Mount Vernon next summer with six performances taking the stage at the Knox County Memorial Theater July 6-14. This will be MTVarts’ seventh musical production following the presentation of this past summer’s “Grease,” as well as its predecessors “Cinderella” (2011), “Annie” (2010), “The Wizard of Oz” (2009), “Peter Pan” (2008) and Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” (2007). The musical will be produced by MTVarts.

“The Music Man” follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms to start a youth band, which he says is the answer to straighten out the town’s “troubles.” While the rest of the town is suckered in by Hill, he gets more than he bargained for when the local librarian, Marian, sees right through his devious plans. Winner of six Tony awards, “The Music Man” opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York City on Dec. 19, 1957, and ran for 1,375 performances. With story, music and lyrics created by Meredith Willson, this classic musical features a score filled with memorable tunes like “Till There Was You,” “Gary Indiana,” “Ya Got Trouble,” and, of course, “76 Trombones”.

In 1962, Warner Brothers released the movie version. The film won the Academy Award that year for Best Musical Score.

This wholesome, fun-filled show will appeal to everyone in the family and will require a large cast of nearly 60 people of all ages, with many featured roles.

Those interested are encouraged to audition on April 20, 2013, and audition details and requirements will be found on MTVarts website www.mtvarts.com beginning in 2013.

The production will be co-directed by Leah Andrews and Bruce Jacklin. Diane Dingler and Dane Heuchemer will be returning in their respective roles as music director and conductor.
