MOUNT VERNON — The monthly Music in America series continues Thursday with Sarah Goslee Reed exploring and demonstrating folk music in America.

How is folk music defined as it’s played in America? The dictionary tells us “American folk music is a musical term that encompasses numerous genres, many of which are known as traditional music, traditional folk music, contemporary folk music or roots music.”

Goslee Reed will play and discuss the type of folk music she plays and writes and will take the audience on a journey through different styles of folk music and tell us what she considers folk music, where it comes from in American tradition and what modern folk music means and what is means to her.

The program will be presented at ThePlace@TheWoodward.111 S. Main St., in downtown Mount Vernon. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the program will start at 7 in this first-floor facility. As with the Chautauqua Series, this show is presented on a donation basis. For more information on this and upcoming programs in the Music in America and/or Chautauqua/Lyceum Series, call 392-6102, 392-3018 or visit
