MOUNT VERNON — The congregation of the Newark Road Church of Christ, 1200 Newark Road, is accepting donations for the Hurricane Sandy victims through Dec. 10.
The local congregation is working with the Gateway Church of Christ in New Jersey, which is helping the New Jersey Union Beach town, which had over 180 homes destroyed. It will be six to eight months before the victims are able to rebuild due to the destroyed intra-structure (gas, water, electricity and sewer).
Meanwhile, many are staying in a nearby army barracks. There is desperate need for everything. Christmas-themed and children-themed pillowcases with a stuffed animal are being made locally. Toiletries, hats, gloves, new stuffed animals and gift cards are being collected.
Church services at Newark Road Church of Christ are Sunday at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., and 6 p.m.; and Wednesday at 7 p.m. The public may drop off donation items and join in the worship. For items that need to be picked up, call 397-0838 or 397-0750.
