MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Nazarene University Music Department will present a number of holiday events, and invites the Knox County community to attend. These events will be a celebration of this joyous season, and will feature MVNU’s instrumental and choral ensembles. Each presentation is free and open to the public.
Monday — The Jazz Band will be performing in the Prince Student Union at 7:30 p.m. This casual evening of jazz will feature music of the big band era including Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable” and “Paper Moon.” Other selections include “Pick Up the Pieces” and “Satin Doll.”
Wednesday — MVNU will be presenting its annual Advent Service in the Chapel Auditorium at 7:15 p.m. The service will feature traditional scripture readings of the Christmas story, special music by the Music Department ensembles, and an Advent message by Chaplain Scott Peterson. Thursday — Goliards Chamber Choir will be performing in Thorne Performance Hall at 8 p.m. Their presentation, entitled “Sing Me To Heaven,” will include diverse compositions from the 17th century to the modern era and features music celebrating our Savior’s birth through the promise of eternal life.
•Friday — MVNU will be presenting the Student Messiah in the Chapel Auditorium at 10:20 a.m. The MVNU Choral Union will present excerpts from Handel’s Messiah with student soloists Natasha Cottrell, Nicholas DeWalt, Michelle Guajardo, Emily Johnston, Annelise Mason, and Cody Thomas.
•Sunday, Dec. 9 — MVNU’s annual Messiah performance will be held in the Chapel Auditorium at 7 p.m. This is our traditional presentation of Handel’s Messiah, featuring MVNU Choral Union, orchestra, and soloists Elizabeth Barrett, Carolyn Redman, Tyler Skidmore, and David Templeton. Refreshments are available at intermission. Donations are accepted for music scholarships.
