GAMBIER — The Kenyon College Jazz Ensemble performs favorites and lesser-known nuggets on Friday, Feb. 1, at 8 p.m. in Rosse Hall Auditorium, 105 College Park Drive.
Under the direction of Associate Professor of Music Ted Buehrer, the ensemble will play a program that includes well-loved songs such as “Blue Skies,” “God Bless the Child,” “Shiny Stockings” and “Adjustment.” The group will also perform “Coisa numero um” by Brazilian composer Moacir Santos.
“Shiny Stockings” has a history at Kenyon. A recently unearthed photograph shows the Count Basie Orchestra performing at Kenyon in 1955. Frank Foster, a member of the saxophone section, had written “Shiny Stockings” that year, and Buehrer said it was very likely the piece was performed the night of the Kenyon concert.
The ensemble features Kenyon students and community members. The musicians are Jason Cerf of Montclair, N.J.; Andrew Clarkson of Mount Vernon; Garrett Feldman of East Northport, N.Y.; Luke Frisher of San Francisco; Sam Graf of Chicago; Mary Alice Jackson of Old Greenwich, Conn.; Michael Kengmana of Bronx, N.Y.; Dan Laskin, Kenyon publications director; Ted Meyer of Northfield, N.M.; Bob Milnikel, associate professor of mathematics; Chris Murphy of Shaker Heights; Sterling Nelson of Golden Valley, Minn.; Alex Pang of Honolulu; Ben Pfister of Carlisle, Pa.; Adam Reed of Petosky, Mich.; Chris Swarz of Wheeling, Ill.; Kenyon alumnus Tracy Smith of Mount Gilead; Noah Weinman of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; Yoni Wilkenfeld of New York City; Jacob Williams of Solon; Shannon Wright of Penfield, N.Y.; and Lily Zwaan of Exeter, N.H.
In the second half of the program, Cary Dachtyl, adjunct instructor of percussion, will join the ensemble and perform a solo on the vibraphone on “It Might As Well Be Swing” and on the drums for “Love for Sale.”
