GAMBIER — The critically acclaimed Baroque ensemble Rebel performs at Kenyon College on Friday at 8 p.m. in Brandi Recital Hall at Storer Hall, 105 College Drive.

The group, formed in the Netherlands in 1991 and now based in Peekskill, N.Y., is the only period instrument ensemble awarded an artists’ residency by National Public Radio. Rebel was the resident ensemble at Trinity Church in New York City from 1997-2009. Rebel includes Jorg-Michael Schwarz on Baroque violin and viola, Karen Marie Marmer on Baroque violin and viola, Matthias Maute on recorder and transverse flute, John Moran on Baroque cello, and Dongsok Shin on harpsichord and organ.

The music is played with passion and not in a conventional, polite style, according to the New York Times. “We’re not afraid to include rough sounds, to explore the entire palette of sound production, of affect, of dynamics,” Marmer told the Times. “We play them without apology.”

The free performance is part of the Taylor Concert Series, sponsored by the Kenyon Department of Music, and the public is encouraged to attend. To learn more, call 740-427-5197.
