MOUNT VERNON — An evening of Ragtime and Folk Blues will be held Saturday, March 16 at 7 p.m. in The Place@The Woodward Opera House, 111 S. Main St., Mount Vernon. This performance will be free of charge but donations to help re-coup costs for the artists’ travel, rental of the thePlace@theWoodward and for live sound engineering will be accepted.
Andy Cohen will be blasting through Ohio on his way back from the East Coast around the middle of March and one if the gigs is scheduled for March 16, along with his buddy Noah Shull, another blues player from central Ohio.
Cohen’s been involved in blues playing, promotion, preservation and the monitoring of blues musicians in Ohio for abut the last 40 years, even though he’s lived most of the last 20 in Memphis. He ran the Kent State Folk Festival a number of times and was responsible for bringing Pigmeat Jarrett, Big Joe Duskin, John Jackson, Son Thomas and Big Boy Henry there, in addition to any number of stellar revival performers. His band, Cohen and the Barbarians, was a Sunday staple at the old Brady’s Cafe in Kent and his gigs with Joe Larose and Gary Hawk, with whom he also recorded two vinyl albums, were legendary. He remains the fleet fingered virtuoso, still competing with some of the youngsters he taught while living in Kent, such as Eric Noden, Jen Maurer and Patrick Sweany. Andy hopes to see some of his old friends at ... when he comes up. Though he dwells in Memphis, a piece of his musical heart resides yet in Northeast Ohio.
Noah Shull has been playing blues music professionally since a teenager and has been blessed enough to have studied with some wonderful musicians throughout his years of musical development, to name a few, Jorma Kaukonen (Hot Tuna/Jefferson Airplane); G.E. Smith (Hall and Oats/SNL); Chuck Day (Mommas and the Pappas/Johnny Rivers Band). He and Steve Frye are the early Americana-Country Blues duo Front Porch Revival. Noah and Steve bring a unique blend of incredibly moving and beautiful blues music and wealth of knowledge of American blues music catalog.
