MOUNT VERNON — The 2013 Annual Goat Banquet will take place Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 200 N. Main St.
Guest speaker will be Katherine Harrison. Harrison served as general manager of Blystone Farm Butcher Shop from 2005-10, and now assists her family’s business by overseeing food safety.
She continues to operate her grandparents’ livestock farm in Canal Winchester, and is actively engaged in restoring it to a substantial agricultural operation. She owns a commercial meat goat herd; and raises chickens, sheep, cattle and hogs. Since 2005, Harrison Farm has offered internships, creating educational opportunities for 10 young people (eight of whom are now pursuing careers in agriculture).
Harrison frequently serves as a speaker on goat and sheep production, niche marketing, agricultural policy, and animal-human relationship. She has traveled throughout the eastern and southern United States giving speeches, consulting on livestock operations, and announcing and judging livestock shows.
Harrison is active in numerous agricultural groups, including the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association and the Animals for Life Foundation. She is a state trustee for the Ohio Farm Federation and is an active volunteer with the Eastern Cashmere Association.
