GAMBIER — The Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet, a cutting-edge Latin jazz outfit, performs at Kenyon College on Thursday, March 21, at 8 p.m.

The free concert is in Rosse Hall, 105 College Drive. The band creates a fusion of Afro-Peruvian rhythms and jazz harmonies. The New York Times said the sextet “has brought spark and intelligence to an uncommon strain of Latin jazz.” And the online Latin Jazz Network described the band as “one of the most exciting Latin American groups performing today.”

Alegria is a composer who plays trumpet. He has performed in more than 400 concerts around the world. He is a native of Peru and a 1993 graduate of Kenyon. Alegria is the associate director of Jazz studies at New York University. The band has recorded five albums.

The performance is part of the Gund Concert Series at Kenyon. To learn more, call 740-427-5197.
