MOUNT VERNON — Women fleeing violence have found shelter, advocacy and other supportive services at New Directions for 30 years. Additionally, New Directions promotes healthy relationships throughout the county with a focus on eradicating the roots of violence and helping those scarred by violence rebuild their lives.

Because these needs persist and meeting those needs require resources, community support is essential. Last year, the second annual fund raising dinner was held. More than 200 community members and sponsors turned out to support New Directions at the Knox County Career Center. Over $26,000 was raised with each guest donating at least $100.

This year’s dinner will be held at the Knox County Career Center on April 18, at 6 p.m. The speaker will be Rus Ervin Funk, co-founder and executive director of MensWork: Eliminating Violence against Women Inc. MensWork is a community based organization in Louisville, Ky. focusing on developing male leadership to prevent all forms of sexual and domestic violence.

Funk has been working to end violence against women since 1983, and is also a nationally recognized expert and consultant. He is currently working with the states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and New York on their engaging men and prevention strategies.

Funk’s keynote will be, “Engaging Men: We CAN Prevent Domestic Violence.” He will also be meeting with students at Kenyon College to discuss how men can take a leadership role in ending violence against women.

Funk also serves as the secretary of the board of the National Center on Sexual and Domestic Violence, is on the boards of the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Association of Community Organization and Social Administration, serves on the Steering Committee of the North American Men Engage Network and is on the Advisory Boards of Mobilizing Men for Violence Prevention and the Healthy Masculinity Action Project.
