MOUNT VERNON — Nicknamed “The Motorcycle Queen of Miami,” Bessie Stringfield was the first woman to ride across the United States solo. During World War II, she served as one of the few motorcycle dispatch riders for the United States military. She is credited with breaking down barriers for women and was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame, and given an award for Superior Achievement by a Female Motorcyclist, named in her honor.

One of the goals of the Elixir Chautauqua Series is to bring a wide range of interesting historical people from all eras and areas of human endeavor, some that are very famous and others that were more talented or groundbreaking but not as well known — all with amazing stories to tell. Organizers strive to bring education beyond the textbooks, entertainment, quality, fun and something not found anywhere in the United States.

Portraying Bessie Stringfield will be Sandra Quick, an OHC level speaker, who will be making her second Chautauqua appearance in Mount Vernon. Opening the program will be a selection of delta blues music performed by Front Porch Revival.

The program is presented at ThePlace@TheWoodward, 111 S. Main St. on Thursday. ThePlace@TheWoodward is a first floor facility and accessible to people with special needs such as walkers, wheel chairs or strollers. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the program starts at 7. Admission is on a donation basis. For further information on this or upcoming programs visit www.elixirpresents.com or call 740-392-6102 or 740-392-3018.
