MOUNT VERNON — Bishop John G. Innis will speak at the 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. worship services on Sunday, June 2, at the Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 N. Gay St.

He was born to Philip Dwah and Conwree Innis in Grand Bassa County, Liberia. After obtaining his elementary and secondary education from the Camphor United Methodist Mission School and Bassa High School, respectively, in Grand Bassa County, he later enrolled at the University of Liberia after teaching for two years at Camphor Mission. He earned a B.Sc. in Education from the William V.S. Tubman Teachers’ College. In 1985, he was awarded a Crusade Scholarship for post-graduate work at the Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo., where he obtained a Master of Divinity in 1988.

Innis was ordained deacon in The United Methodist Church in 1989 in Greenville, Sinoe County, and an elder in 1991 in Ganta, Nimba County. He was elected bishop on the first ballot at the West Africa Central Conference of The United Methodist Church held in Monrovia in December 2000, and assigned to the Liberia Area of The United Methodist Church. In 2003, he was additionally assigned to the Cote d\'Ivoire to give supervision to The United Methodist Church there, which he did until the election of Bishop Benjamin Boni in March 2005.

Dr. Innis has traveled extensively throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States. Abingdon Press published his first book, his autobiography, “By the Goodness of God.” He serves as vice president of the Liberia Council of Churches and is also president of the Central Conferences College of Bishops.

He is married to Irene Janjay Zeon, and they have four children, Chenda, Janjay, Bleejay and Blason.
