MOUNT VERNON — The Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County will present the film, “Metropolis,” as a free movie matinee on Sunday, July 7, at 2 p.m. as part of the Groundbreaking Reads Adult Summer Reading Program.

Incorporating more of the 25 minutes of footage lost to the world for more than 80 years, this Blu-ray restored edition of the 1927 silent sci-fi masterpiece directed by Fritz Lang is the definitive “Godfather” of all sci-fi films. The film is not rated.

First filmed in an era without computer generated effects, a stash of lost film was found recently in Buenos Aires. Fully restored, the film depicts groundbreaking photographic techniques, dazzling special effects and visual design. “Metropolis” dramatizes the conflict between wealthy uber-capitalists and rebellious subterranean laborers — orchestrated by a diabolical scientist capable of destroying them both.

The program is free and open to the public. Popcorn donated by Subway of Mount Vernon. Participants will be eligible for door prizes and registration for the Groundbreaking Reads Adult Summer Reading Program weekly and grand prize drawings will be available.

For more information stop by the Mount Vernon main library at 201 N. Mulberry St.; call 740-392-BOOK (2665), ext. 243; visit or email
