GAMBIER — Premier kiddie-rock musician Justin Roberts brings his Not Ready for Naptime Players to Kenyon College for a free concert today at 2 p.m.
Roberts, a Grammy nominee, will appear at the outdoor South Quad Stage on the Kenyon campus. Roberts and his band are touring in support of “Recess,” a new album of high-energy pop songs for family listening, which will be released on July 23. Roberts released his 10th album, “Lullaby,” in 2012. USA Today has called Roberts “the best songwriter in the genre.” The Los Angeles Times has noted the “deft lyrics and beautiful sound” that Roberts delivers.
Based in Evanston, Ill., Roberts launched his musical career while a Kenyon student with the indie-rock band Pimentos for Gus. He graduated from Kenyon in 1992 and is joined in the band by 1990 Kenyon graduate Liam Davis.
A recent review of “Recess,” posted by the Boston nonprofit arts organization Passim, said the new album continues Roberts’ appeal to not only children but to parents as well. The range of styles found in “Recess,” which was produced by Davis, includes “power pop to ska and gentle, country-tinged acoustic rock to ’60s psychedelia.”
The public is encouraged to attend the free concert. In the event of rain, the concert will take place in the Peirce Pub in Peirce Hall, 201 College-Park St. To learn more about the concert call 740-427-5583.
