MOUNT VERNON — The Heritage Centre Association’s July First Friday event will be Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., in downtown Mount Vernon. The event will feature music by Katty Whomp Us on the main stage.
Additional activities include Sophia’s Petting Zoo, bounce house, balloon sculptor Rex Naylor and cornhole.
Goody bags will be given 25 random registrants of the Cruise In. There is no fee to participate; door prizes will be awarded. The registration tent will be on the west side of the Square; enter from West High Street.
Food will be provided on the Square by Flapper’s Bar & Grille and Woolson’s Kettle Corn. Downtown merchants will be open late for shopping and dining, many with special sales and discounts. Some of the activities found downtown include:
•Y-Not Cycling & Fitness, register to win a gift certificate.
•The Place @ The Woodward, listen to a local youth showcase of vocal talent.
•Kudos Art Co-Op, enjoy refreshments; hear guitar and mountain dulcimer music from “Long Overdue”; see watercolor demonstrations by artist Helen Neumann.
•WNZR’s Big Blue, register to win a tote bag with a whole-house cleaning gift certificate from Amy Kessler of Carefree Cleaning Co., along with other WNZR goodies.
• Herald’s Appliances and Electronics, see cooking/grilling demos with samples with Chef Rob from the Gallagher Center.
•Gospel Supply Shop, hear music by “3C Harmony.”
•Knox County Renaissance Foundation, see an art exhibit of Grandma Moses’ and her great-grandson Will Moses’ works. Will Moses will be present for the show. Advance tickets are $10; $15 at First Friday.
•Paragraphs Bookstore, get a book signed by illustrator and artist Will Moses from 3 to 4 p.m.; register to win a stuffed duck and a children’s book; meet Waldo and participate in a Waldo scavenger hunt in 25 downtown businesses.
•Flapper’s Bar & Grille, hear the music of Chris Gannt starting at 9 p.m.
•Shops on North Main “Very Short North,” bring the kids to the craft table; enjoy a free popsicle.
•Shops in the 200 block of South Main – Participate in the kids’ sidewalk chalk art contest.
•Java Hut – Participate in a “bean count” for a gift certificate.
•Jooniper Moreland Photography – Register to win a free photo shoot of the winner’s choice (excludes weddings). •Explore nearly 40 exhibitors on the Public Square.
Acoustic guitarist J.T. Hiller will perform on South Main, sponsored by Rolls Royce. The Woodward Opera House will be open for tours from 6 to 8 p.m.
Traffic will be closed one block north of the Square, around the Square and on south Main Street to Ohio Avenue (Gambier Street will remain open) starting at 4:30 p.m. Rain location for the bands is Creative Foundations at 127 South Main Street.
