MOUNT VERNON — The second concert in the new summer series of Music in the Garden is coming up on July 21, from 4 to 6 p.m., in the Children’s Garden behind the Knox County Career Center. Sponsored by a grant from the Ariel Foundation, these concerts are free to all and appropriate for families and children.

Attendees are invited to bring a picnic supper, blankets and chairs, and should be prepared to enjoy a variety of live music, as well as the beauty of the garden’s flora and fauna. The Science Play-Space Initiative (SPI Spot) will provide a hands-on activity for children of all ages to explore the fun of science.

This month’s concert features the Columbus jazz trio Miss B. Haven. Accompanied by piano, bass and drums, Debbie Brennan’s silky vocals give jazz standards a unique and contemporary style. Come experience the garden filled with old and new jazz sounds. Find out more about Brennan and the band on her website,

The SPI Spot activity will feature the science behind bubbles. Visitors can learn about surface tensions and the shapes that bubbles take on when created through many different means. Giant bubbles made with hula hoops and smaller ones made by using common kitchen utensils will entertain everyone.

The final concert of this year’s Summer Music Garden Series will be on Aug. 18 with entertainment by Padula Oblongata, a Hammond B3 organ-based jazz and blues quintet, featuring Michael Padula, former touring organist with the Platters. Dancing in the garden is encouraged. More details about Padula Oblongata can be found on their website,

The SPI Spot activity will include a yo-yo demonstration by Jim Marth. Marth will explain the physics of yo-yos and will have some Duncan Yo-yos available for all to try.

For more information about these free concerts, visit or or find both on Facebook. Call Sarah Goslee Reed at 392-4955 to be put on a mailing list.
