Paul G. Crawford
MOUNT VERNON — Paul G. Crawford, 96, of Mount Vernon died Aug. 30, 2005,
at Knox Community Hospital.
He was born Dec. 5, 1908, in Licking County to Edward and Edith (Kidd) Crawford. He was a member of the Martinsburg Church of Christ, and graduated in 1928 from the Martinsburg High School. He served three years as a U.S. Army sergeant during World War II. He was employed by Shellmar Products and Continental Can Co. for 38 years, where he was a supervisor in Quality Control before his retirement in 1973.
He participated in softball and baseball for several years as a player and manager. Later was a member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association, and the Amateur Softball Association, serving as an umpire in Central Ohio for many years. While serving as umpire he saw the need for girls to be able to play softball. So under the direction of the park and recreation board of city council he organized about 50 girls into four teams for the first season of girls softball. This was followed by the efforts of many people to form the Girls Softball League.
His hobby was gardening, and he maintained a strawberry patch for many years. He also picked apples for Apple Hill Orchard for 20 years after his retirement.
Paul is survived by his wife, Ellen (Kunkle) Crawford, to whom he had been married nine years; two stepdaughters; two nieces; and a nephew.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Mabel E. (Harman) Crawford, in 1988; and a sister, Ruth Crawford.
Friends may call Saturday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the North-Dilley Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with Pastor Michael Smith officiating.
