Pearl E. Burkett
MOUNT VERNON — Pearl Evelyn Burkett, 74, of Mount Vernon died Friday, June 15, 2007, at the Country Court Retirement Campus in Mount Vernon.

Pearl was born Oct. 30, 1932, in Conesville to Earl J. and Maude (Ochsenbein) Saylor and was a graduate of Conesville High School. She moved to Mount Vernon 10 years ago from the Massillon area. She was a member of AA in Mount Vernon and attended The Salvation Army in Mount Vernon.

Surviving are her daughters, Maude (Charles) Proper of Mount Vernon and Mae (Ronald) Reed of Belair, Ohio; her grandchildren, Rachael (Scott) Glancy, Charles (Joy) Shepard II, Cheyenne Proper, Ronald Reed Jr., Robert Reed and Jennie (Lawrence) Geiser; several great-grandchildren; several stepchildren; her sisters, Essie Guthrie and Carmen Jarvis, both of Coshocton, Christine (Gerald) Foraker of Mission, Texas, Sharon (John) Buncak of Trinway and Ramona “Monie” (Benjamin) Untied Sr. of Conesville; her brothers, Fred (Palma) Saylor and Donnie (Judy) Saylor, both of Trinway, Thurman (Annette) Saylor of Goldsboro, N.C., and Richard (Mary) Saylor of Coshocton; her brother-in-law, Bob (Phyllis) Burkett of Massillon; and two special friends, Velma Hunt and Brenda Hermani.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Burkett; a daughter, Patricia Lynn Weller; a son, Robert E. Weller; a granddaughter; and a sister, Mary Ellen Entringer.

Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, where funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Maj. Robert Bender officiating. Burial will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Brookfield Cemetery near Massillon.

Janice M. Lemley
MOUNT GILEAD — Janice M. (Gleason) Owens Lemley, 68, of Mount Gilead died Friday afternoon, June 15, 2007, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Janice was born March 9, 1939, in Morrow County the daughter of Denzil W. and Eileen C. (Shier) Gleason. She was a graduate of Chesterville High School with the class of 1957. She and her classmates were recently honored at the annual Chesterville Alumni Banquet on their 50th year. Following graduation she worked at H.P.M. For the past 25 years Janice worked at the Town Pump, where she made many friends with her smile and sense of humor.

On June 12, 1959, she married James G. Owens. Together they have one son, Mark R. Owens. On Sept. 25, 1971, she married G. Michael Lemley, who survives. Janice loved nature. One of her favorite pastimes was looking for arrowheads. Whenever there was an animal in need Janice was the one to call. Others would have given up on the many kittens that she nurtured back to health over the years.

She enjoyed family get-togethers and spending time with friends. She was a good cook and the family always expected a dish of her special deviled eggs at family functions.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Mark R. Owens, her husband, G. Michael Lemley, a brother, Carrol (Jeannine) Gleason, and a sister, Donna (Chuck) Treisch, all of near Chesterville; father-in-law, Herman (Marie) Lemley of Florida; sisters-in-law, Beverly Sobers and Kimberly Lemley, brothers-in-law, John and Roger Lemley, all of Mount Vernon; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother-in-law, Bertha Lemley; and her first husband, James G. Owens.

Friends may call on the family on Tuesday, June 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services will be held there on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery.

John Phillips Jr.
MOUNT VERNON — John R. Phillips Jr., 84, of Mount Vernon passed away early Monday morning, June 18, 2007, at the Country Court Nursing Center. Arrangements are pending with the Snyder Funeral Home in Fredericktown.

R. Jason Shipley
NEWARK — A funeral service for R. Jason Shipley, 27, of Newark will be held Wednesday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at Highwater Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Torie Front, associate minister, officiating. Burial will follow in South Lawn Cemetery.

Jason died June 16, 2007. He was born Dec. 28, 1979, in Newark to Randall J. and Sandra J. (McCullough) Shipley.

He was a 1998 Utica High School graduate and a 2003 Wilmington College graduate. Jason was a Utica High School football coach where he touched the lives of many young people. He farmed with his dad and grandpa with Shipley Swine Genetics. Jason was known nationwide for his show hogs. He was co-founder of the Shipley-Harris Hog Roast held every July.

He is survived by his father and mother, Randall J. and Sandra (McCullough) Shipley of Newark; sister and brother-in-law, Josie and Richard Snyder of Utica; paternal grandparents, Sidney and Rosalind Shipley of Newark; maternal grandparents, Roland and Betty McCullough of Hebron; aunts, Ronda (Tom) Wolford of Newark, Rita (Kenneth) Shultz of Battle Ground, Ind., and their families; uncles, Jim (Tammy) McCullough of Glenford, Phil (Pam) McCullough of Hebron and their families; girlfriend, Andrea Lyon; and many friends.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Highwater Congregational United Church of Christ, 1213 Dutch Lane NW, Newark.

Joseph E. Torrens
UTICA — A funeral service for Joseph E. Torrens of Utica will be held Wednesday, June 20, at 3 p.m. at Law-Baker Funeral Home. Burial will follow in South Lawn Cemetery.

Joe died June 16, 2007. He was born Jan. 7, 1983, in Newark to Philip J. and Sarah B. (Richcreek) Torrens. He was a member of Utica Presbyterian Church.

He was a 2001 Utica High School graduate and a 2005 graduate of Wittenberg University where he was a member of the Tiger football team. He was working toward his master’s degree in adult education at Carroll College Waukesha, Wis., where he was a graduate assistant football coach.

He is survived by his father and mother, Philip J. and Sarah B. (Richcreek) Torrens, and sister, Ellen Torrens, all of Utica; aunt, Norma Mercurio of Columbus; uncle, John and Sherry Torrens, and cousin, Lori Torrens, all of Utica.

Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice in Joe’s name.
