Gary W. Didinger
DANVILLE — Gary W. Didinger, 74, of Apple Valley passed away peacefully at Knox Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family on Monday, Jan. 14, 2008. Gary has gone home with his Lord and Savior after a courageous battle with cancer. Even in his darkest days, his concern for the welfare of his wife, children and their families, his beloved grandchildren, and his best friend “Barney” were foremost in his mind, and he wanted to be remembered how much he loved his family and friends.
Mr. Didinger was born to Walter H. and Mary Isadore (Starner) Didinger on Oct. 19, 1933, in Danville and had been a lifelong resident of Knox County. He graduated from Danville High School in 1951. Gary married the love of his life, Carol (Dawson) Didinger on Oct. 30, 1953, and they had two daughters and two sons together.
Gary was a very successful businessman for over 60 years. While in high school, he and his father began their own fertilizer business, Didinger & Son Inc. Over the years, Gary and his sons expanded the business into a major agriculture crop service plant. Gary was very proud of his business and took great pride in offering superior service to all his customers. Gary was a “self taught” financial wizard and could crunch numbers in his head like a running calculator. Gary never retired because he loved his work and was very honored to serve his friends and customers for many years.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus (Past Grand Knight), St. Luke Catholic Church, Mohican Investment Club, Ohio AgriBusiness Association, Knox Community Hospital Foundation Board and Big Brothers/Sisters Board of Trustees.
Gary is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Carol A. Didinger; four children, Debbie (Bill) Geiger of Cincinnati, Nancy (Rodger) Stull of Mount Vernon, Michael (Wendy) Didinger of Danville and Todd (Elaine) Didinger of Danville; five very special grandchildren, Heath Geiger of Waynesville and manager of Kroger Corp., Christopher Geiger a senior at University of Dayton, Ashley Didinger a student at Danville schools, Julie Didinger a student at Danville schools, Michaela Didinger a student at Danville schools, and his beloved canine companion, Barney. Barney was Gary’s best friend and he loved going “bye-bye” with Gary and always went everywhere with him including out to dinner and to church.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother and father, Walter and Isa Didinger; sisters, Edna Sheldon and Imogene Blaha; brothers-in-law, Floyd “Chap” Sheldon, Dean Rettig and George Blaha; and a beloved dog, Happy.
A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church in Danville with the Rev. F. Richard Snoke officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church with a prayer service at 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made in Gary’s memory to the Palliative Care Unit at Knox Community Hospital, 1330 Coshocton Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050. The Fischer Funeral Home in Danville is handling the arrangements. This obituary can be viewed online at fischerfuneralhome.com.
