Juanita Hood
MOUNT VERNON — Juanita (Dove) Hood, 98, born June 18,1909, in Shelbyville, Ill., was greeted by her Lord Jesus and escorted to Paradise on Jan. 10, 2008.
Nurtured in a caring Christian family and the friendly community of Shelbyville, Ill., she loved and enjoyed people from all walks of life. Her world view was greatly enhanced when in 1925, her family took her on a five-month tour around the world. Her servant heart endeared her to those around her. Following graduation from Shelbyville High School in 1927, she attended Ohio Wesleyan College two years before transferring to Columbia School of Nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in NYC, graduating in 1931 with an RN degree.
While in nursing school, she met Donald Hood whom she married Aug. 30, 1933. They had three sons, Richard, John and Donald. She was devoted to her nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to home nursing, she was Director of Nursing for the Indianapolis Chapter of the Red Cross in the 1950s. She served as a house mother at Ball Residence, Indiana University in the 1960s before being called back home to nurse her ailing mother. She was an active member of Christian Park Reformed Church in Indianapolis, Ind., since 1946, teaching, hosting missionaries and international students, as well as helping whenever called on. Also, she was active in the Indianapolis Wheeler Mission Guild for many years. She enjoyed poetry, camping and traveling in the USA, and made trips to Europe and Japan.
In 2004, she moved to Summerville at HillenVale in Mount Vernon, where she could be looked after by her sons, John and Don.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore Clark and Nita (Yantis) Dove; husband, Donald; her brother, Clark Jr.; sisters, Alta Jane Hardy and Helen (Dehne) Paulson; son, Richard; and granddaughter, Christina (Hood) Gemperline.
Memorial service will be Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. at Summerville at HillenVale, 1615 Yauger Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050; and Friday, Jan. 25, at Christian Park Reformed Church in Indianapolis, Ind., at 1 p.m. If there is inclement weather on Jan. 25, the Indianapolis service will be postponed to Feb. 8.
