Lawrence M. Zeigler

MOUNT VERNON — Lawrence M. Zeigler, 90, of Mount Vernon passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 28, 2008, at Knox Community Hospital.

He was born Feb. 23, 1918, in Knox County, a son of Melvin H. and Nellie (Davis) Zeigler. He spent his lifetime in the Knox County area and retired as a mechanic for the Knox County Highway Department in 1982. Lawrence served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was an avid outdoorsman loving to hunt and fish. At 89 years old, Lawrence bagged a turkey and a deer this past hunting season. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon, a life member of the Centerburg Conservation Club and the Knox County Fish and Game Club.

Lawrence is survived by a nephew, Jim Ashton of Delaware; and close friends, June Bell of Homer and Vaughn Thomas of Mount Vernon.

In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, Helen I. (Gardner) Zeigler, on Feb. 21, 1991; and a sister, Olive Ashton.

Friends may call Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church, 170 Mansfield Ave., Mount Vernon, with Pastor Mark Wildermuth officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
