Tyrus R. Rice
MOUNT VERNON — Tyrus R. “Ty” Rice, 84, of Yauger Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008, at the Knox Community Hospital.
He was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Danville to the late John G. and Lola (Shorder) Rice. Ty was a 1941 graduate of Danville High School where he was active in sports, was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church, the American Legion in Danville, and was a World War II veteran of the 45th Infantry Division serving overseas from 1943-1945. He retired from Cooper-Bessemer, after 46 years, and enjoyed his grandchildren, fishing, traveling, sports and his horses.
He is survived by his wife of over 57 years, E. Jane (Irvine) Rice; two daughters, Pamela (Victor) Conkle of Mount Vernon, Deborah (David) Howard of Mount Vernon; eight grandchildren, Joshua Conkle, Tyler Conkle, Erin Conkle, Tracey (Ron) Ahue, Jennifer (Stephen) Archibald, Bryanne (Ryan) Duffin, Melissa (Bob) Stoneking, Cathy (Seth) Ghering; eight great-grandchildren, Alice, Jack, Sam, Dillon, Ryker, Taylor, Gabe, Natalie; a brother, Fred Rice of Mansfield; a brother-in-law, Wendell Irvine; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ty was preceded in death by sisters, Lucille, Josephine, Lenore and Retha.
Friends may call Friday, April 11, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, with the funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Bishop Troy Cooper will officiate. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Workman Cemetery at Danville.
