Harold J. Burch

GAMBIER — Harold J. “Babe” Burch, 93, of Gambier died Friday, May 23, 2008, at Summerville at HillenVale, Mount Vernon.

He was born Feb. 25, 1915, in Gambier to George and Viletta (Mills) Burch. He graduated from Gambier High School in 1933. A World War II veteran, he entered the Army Air Force in 1943 and served until September 1945. Recipient of the Purple Heart for being wounded in England by a bomb fragmentation in 1944. He returned to Gambier to begin farming. He was a substitute mail carrier for 22 years, College Township Trustee for 16 years, school bus driver for 24 years. He is a member of the Grove Church of Christ, American Legion, 40 and 8 and the D.A.V., past member of the Gambier Fishing Club, Tomahawk Seniors Golf League and Past Chairman of the Quarry Chapel Restoration Committee.

He is survived by his loving family: son, Gary (Nancy) Burch of Bellville; daughter, Nancy (Chuck) Peugh of Mount Vernon; four grandchildren, John (Sue) Burch, Yvonne (Matt) Mercer, Chris (Lisa) Brooks and Mandy (Tommy) Craze; five great-grandchildren, Danielle Burch, Ben Burch, Rachel Mercer, Ryan Mercer and David Brooks; sister, Nancy Burch Chalker; brother, Ray (Dorothy) Burch; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Helen V. Burch; brothers, William, Paul, Fred and Dale Burch; stepmother, Pearl Burch.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Church of Christ, 7740 Grove Church Road, Gambier, with Evangelist Jerold Tear officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Quarry Chapel Cemetery.
